2008 Arthur Ellis Shortlist
Crime Writers of Canada was founded in 1982 as a professional organization designed to raise the profile of Canadian crime writers from coast to coast. ST MARTIN'S/MWA CONTEST WINNER
St Martin's Minotaur and MWA will formally present the winner of their "First Crime Novel" contest at the Edgar Awards Banquet, scheduled for tonight, May 1, in New York City.
The winner is Stephanie Pintoff, "an attorney who has completed extensive academic research in detective fiction and the history of criminology" according t the press release just issued. Her novel, to be published in 2009 is tentatively titled In The Shadow of Gotham, and is set in turn-of-the-century New York. Pintoff received a $10,000 one book contract and was chosen from among over 700 entries.

FORENSIC SYMPOSIUM
Pittsburgh's Duquesne University will host "Where Fact Meets Fiction: A National Symposium on the Intersection of Forensic Science and Pop Culture" on April 3-5. Participants include authors Jan Burke, Linda Fairstein. D P Lyle, Lee Goldberg and Robert Tanenbaum along with technical experts in legal and forensic fields. Other faculty include writers, actors and researchers from several top television programs which use these themes.

HAMMETT PRIZE NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers (IACW) has announced the nominees for their annual Hammett Prize. It is awarded for a work of "literary excellence in the field of crime writing" by an author from the United States or Canada. The nominees are as follows:

ALA GIVES NEW GENRE AWARDS
At their Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia on January 16, the American Library Association awarded the first Reading List awards. This award is given to outstanding fiction in a number of genres.The American Library Association's "Reading List Council" recently announced these new awards focusing on genre fiction. In order to "highlight outstanding genre fiction that merits special attention by general adult readers and the librarians who work with them" ALA announced recommended books for "The Reading List 2008" in eight different categories. These included "adrenaline titles", a category which is meant to cover "suspense, thrillers, and action adventure" as well as separate horror and mystery categories. The books were chosen by a jury.
