RAVEN HONORS ANNOUNCED

Mystery Writers of America has announced that it will honor two bookstores with the Raven Award. This award, given for "outstanding acheivement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing", will go to Mystery Loves Company of Maryland and Books & Books Bookstores of Dade County, Florida at the 2007 Edgar Award ceremony. The ceremony will be held on April 26, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan.

Deadline News salutes Kathy and Tom Harig of MLC and Mitchell Kaplan of Books & Books for their service to the mystery community.

NEW AWARD ANNOUNCED

WORDHARVEST Writers workshops and Thomas Dunne Books will present the Tony Hillerman Prize, a new annual award for mystery fiction in 2007. The award will go to a first mystery novel set in the Southwest written by a previously unpublished mystery author. The winning novel will be published by Thomas Dunne Books and receive a $10,000 advance.

The first winner will be announced in November, 2007 at the fourth annual Tony Hillerman Writers Conference: Focus on Mystery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Deadline for submissions is July 1, 2007.

HILLERMAN CONTEST WINNER

Recently, at the annual Tony Hillerman Writers Conference, the winner of the annual mystery short story contest was announced. Cowboys & Indians Magazine and WORDHARVEST chose M. Kent Anderson as the winner, with "Going Back...To Where You Wanted To Be In The First Place". Anderson received a prize of $1500; the story will appear in of In the March, 2007 issue of Cowboys & Indians.

Anderson is the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He has worked in New Mexico and Oklahoma and with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Now in its third year, the contest received a record 266 entries from professional and amateur writers throughout the U.S and from England and Canada. All of the writers who entered the contest and were present at the conference received a signed Tony Hillerman mystery novel.
