STEPHEN KING NAMED GRAND MASTER

Mystery Writers of America has announced that Stephen King has been chosen to receive their highest honor, being named as a Grand Master.

According to MWA, "The annual Grand Master Award represents the pinnacle of achievement in the mystery field." Given almost yearly since 1955, the Grand Master Award has gone to luminaries in the field ranging from John Le Carre, Ed McBain, Ngaio Marsh to John D. MacDonald, from P D James to Tony Hillerman, Marcia Muller and Donald Westlake.

King is an award-winning and hugely popular author with more than thirty books to his credit; his newest LISEY’S STORY is being released this month.

The award is given at MWA's annual Edgar Awards Ceremonies. In 2007, the ceremonies are set for April 26 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel at Grand Central Terminal, in Manhattan

ELLIS PETERS HISTORICAL AWARD ANNOUNCED

Britain's Crime Writers Assocation has announced the 2006 winner of the Ellis Peters Historical Crime Award. The award has gone to Edward Wright for Red Sky Lament, the third in his John Ray Horn series.

The announcement of the winner came October 9 at a special champagne reception. Wright received £3000. The first book in this series, Clea's Moon, won the Debut Dagger award.

ACWL GIVES NEHR AWARD

This year, the American Crime Writer's League gave its annual award for mystery reviewing, the Ellen Nehr Award, to Dick Adler, reviewer for the Chicago Tribune. The award was announced during ceremonies at Bouchercon, which took place last week in Madison.

SHAMUS AWARDS GIVEN AT BOUCHERCON

Private Eye Writers of America handed out the 2006 Shamus Awards during a ceremony last week in Madison, Wisconsin.
The winners were as follows:

Best Hardcover Novel:
THE LINCOLN LAWYER, Michael Connelly (Little Brown)

Best Paperback Novel:
THE JAMES DEANS, Reed Farrel Coleman (Plume)

Best First Novel:
FORCING AMARYLLIS, Louise Ure (Mysterious Press)

Best Short Story:
"A Death in Ueno," Michael Wiecek (Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, March, 2005)

PWA's Lifetime Achievement Award, The Eye, went to Max Allan Collins

ANTHONY AWARDS ANNOUNCED

On Saturday, September 30, the 2006 Anthony Awards were announced at Bouchercon in Madison. The awards, named for Anthony Boucher, critic, author and fan, for whom the World Mystery Convention is named, went to the following:

Best Mystery Novel

This year, Bouchercon's organizers created an award for "Special Service to the Field" which went to long time active fan and founder of Mystery Readers International Janet Rudolph

2006 BARRY AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Last week, during Bouchercon, the World Mystery Convention, Deadly Pleasures awarded the Barry Awards, given for work published in 2005. Named for reviewer Barry Gardner, they honor excellence in crime fiction. Editor and publisher George Easter also gave out the Don Sandstrom Award, which honors a fan for lifetime achievement; this award is voted on by previous recipients of the honor.

The winners are as follows:

Best Novel
RED LEAVES, Thomas H. Cook (Harcourt)

Best First Novel
COLD GRANITE, Stuart McBride (HarperCollins)

Best Thriller
COMPANY MAN, Joseph Finder (St. Martin's Press)


Best British Mystery Award

Best Short Story
"There Is No Crime on Easter Island", Nancy Pickard (EQMM, Sept-Oct 2005)

Don Sandstrom Award for Lifetime Achievement went to Janet Rudolph (founder of Mystery Readers International and long time active fan)

Starting in 2007, the Barry Awards and the Sandstrom Award will be co-sponsored by Deadly Pleasures and Mystery News.

MRI MACAVITY AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Mystery Readers International handed out the 2006 Macavity Awards for 2006 last weekend during Bouchercon, the World Mystery Convention. The Macavities are nominted and voted on by members of MRI.

Bouchercon took place in Madison, Wisconsin and the awards were among several given at ceremonies held Thursday, September 28.
