MWA Announces Raven, Ellery Queen Awards

The Raven Award, established in 1953, is given for outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside creative writing. The Ellery Queen award, presented since 1983, honors teams and outstanding people in the mystery-publishing field. Recipients are chosen by the MWA Board of Directors.

A Raven Award will go to Bonnie Claeson and Joe Gugliemelli, co-owners of the Black Orchid Bookshop in New York City. The Black Orchid has become a major supporter of established and emerging authors of crime fiction and non-fiction since it opened almost twelve years ago.

Joan Hansen, who six years ago originated "Men of Mystery" for the non-profit Literary Guild of Orange County (CA), an all-day gathering that this year presented 60 authors to an audience of more than 600, will also receive a Raven Award.

The Ellery Queen Award will be presented to Brian Skupin and Kate Stine, co-publishers of Mystery Scene Magazine, which appears five times annually. The publication, which Ms. Stine also edits, is credited with lively, expert coverage of mystery, crime and suspense fiction, with an emphasis on the creative life of writers.

Awards will be presented at the 60th Annual Edgar Awards banquet, April 27, 2006, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City.
